A name born from resistance
"It is possible that the name Tolahi is, today, Terlaje."
— Geran Chamoru yan Español, 1668–1695
THE ORIGIN OF OUR NAME
1668 – 1675
Maga'Låhi Tolahi resists the Spanish
From the village of Tachuc in Malesso', Guam, Tolahi was a fearless leader. He rallied southern Chamoru villages to resist Spanish colonizers, fighting on many occasions to defend his people and their land.
JUNE 1675
Capture and execution by Captain de Esplana
Captain Damian de Esplana had Tolahi put to death by volley of firearms — an example to all who defied Spanish rule. His village was burned to the ground. His spirit did not die with him.
GENERATIONS LATER
Tolahi becomes Terlaje
Historians believe the name Tolahi evolved across generations into the name Terlaje — carrying the memory of a fearless Chamoru warrior forward through the family that bears his name today.
